- Dallas Remote Imaging Group (DRIG) BBS Provides Keplerian Elements E-Mail
-
- As a service to the AMSAT satellite community, The Dallas Remote Imaging
- Group is providing an automated email response service to request satellite
- keplerian elements via email request.
-
- To obtain the latest satellite keplerian elements, simply send an email
- note to the following addresses for the specific set of satellites
- that you would like. New e-mail address services include:
-
- elements@drig.com
- amsatkep@drig.com
- intelsat@drig.com
- weathkep@drig.com
- shuttle@drig.com
- info@drig.com

- with AMSAT style explicit keplerian elements, email to intelsat@drig.com
- generates the Ted Molczan Intelligence sat keplerian elements, email to
- weathkep@drig.com generates the listing f weather/imaging satellite
- keplerians, and email to shuttle@drig.com generates the latest STS-XX

- MIR: German Astronaut Ulf Merbold, DP3MIR, has been active from the Russian
- space station MIR over Europe during the recent evenings. Unfortunately
- there seems to be a power supply problem aboard MIR, which prevents Ulf
- from using the Digital Voice Memory and obviously reduces his activity to
- only a few passes a day over Europe. Since we do not have exact infor-
- mation about this problem, as all questions and answers regarding the HAM
- activity of DP3MIR have to be relayed via the Moscow Control Center. DP3MIR
- will stay aboard MIR until about 3-NOV-94. We hope, he will be active over
- other continents besides Europe. The QSL info is: DP3MIR via the usual
- German (DARC) QSL Bureau. [DF5DP]

- FO-20: JJ1WTK reports that on 19-OCT-94 that all software needed to start
- the BBS was completed and the BBS is now in full operation. JJ1WTK notes
- also that is has been 4 years since FO-20 was placed into orbit. The
- batteries on FO-20 are performing far better than those aboard FO-12 at
- this same point in FO-20's life. However, the FO-20 batteries have degraded
- slightly and this has caused a change in the battery voltage power control
- unit telemetry item (abbreviated by PCU) to change to level 3.

- Great suggestion - but for the wrong reason. "Too lazy to touch a key"? C'mon,
- buddy - get with it! The horse and buggy went by the wayside a long time ago,
- and so has code. Even the Coast Guard admits that code is obsolete.

-
- You did a good job of pointing out the problems, but your suggestions of
- removing license places and staying home all the time are unreasonable.
- An unlisted phone number, or one with no address is however a great idea.
-
- The FCC is easy to deal with, since they now allow a PO box address to be used
- on the 610 form. State governments, although they fail to protect our personal
- information, are a little more difficult to deal with because some will not
- accept a PO box address. To help the government with their failure in this
- area, I recommend that you get one of those private PO boxes (where mail can be
- delivered to a street address) and use that address on your vehicle
- registration and drivers license.

-
- We regret that many users are having a problem with the recent V4
- release of DXbase. The symptoms are an (apparently) spontaneous return
- to DOS from DXbase usually with an error message beginning with 1801...
- Some PC's may even lock up (although we believe this is a flow control
- issue where the TNC causes the program to appear to be locked up).
-
- There is a fix that will be available 24 October, 1994. It consists of
- a replacement DXB40.EXE. Users will simply copy this into their new
- DXB40 subdirectory, thereby replacing the original.
-
- If you need the replacement file please leave a message on our answering
- machine @ 404-932-1018. Leave your callsign, telephone number and
- request "version 4.0a".

- If you have a telephone modem please request that we leave your exe on

- during these times. The number is 404-903-5530.

- OK guys & gals - if you don't like the "official" clarification of the rules,
- get off your butt and petition the FCC to change the rules to allow the
- traffic you want to send. It worked for the "I just gotta have a pizza right
- now and am too cheap to go to a pay phone so I'll use the 'patch" crowd. Don't
- get me wrong, I like the idea of being able to order a pizza via the patch, but
- the pizza place is not goin to deliver it to me when I'm in the middle of
- nowhere. If I'm at or going to a place where they will (They won't deliver
- to my house - "bad neighborhood") I can wait the few extra min and use the
- phone - that's what it is there for. Back to the point - if you don't like the
- current rules, get enough people in the right places to support your position
- and get the rules changed! That is the true beauty of a democratic society.
-
- Personally I don't read much of the stuff addressed to FOOD, RECIPE, BUTTHEAD,
- ECT but someone must enjoy it - and that's ok with me. The alternative to a
- rule change would be having each BBS in the forwarding chain forward all
- traffic addressed to the BBS callsign. Then the users posting the offending
- traffic" would now be within the rules since it is addressed to the BBS. The
- BBS operators would be covered if they adress all the forwarded stuff to the
- regional forwarding BBS - oh no, that takes ORGINIZATION. TCP/IP can do that
- if it is set up properly - I bet the AX.25 BBSs can too. Anyway, the subject
- area could be used to describe what's in the messageand its audience. That's
- the proper place (under this scheme) for the FOOD, RECIPE, ECT.
-
- So, what's it gonna be?? Do we risk screwing up the hobby by petitioning the
- FCC, or do we implement a system like the one I described to keep everything
- "legal"? It really isn't that hard to stay within the regs.

- If the above code is a mark of a REAL HAM then you have eliminated
- not only all the no-codes but many of the know-codes, too - maybe
- maybe even yourself!
-
- Notice that the `progressive' amateur above (in 1929) built *everything*
- in his station.
-
- How many new hams today will take the time to learn *any* theory,
- and apply that theory along with a soldering iron to make anything
- at all (antennas surely don't count, nor does soldering a PL-259
- on the end of some coax). Even new hams into the 60's and 70's were
- building their station from scratch while waiting for their
- license to arrive, and actively spent weeks if not months *listening*
- to gain the proper operating skills rather than repeadedly saying to
- the world ``Where's my license? It's been xx weeks...'' When these
- hams of yesteryear finally received their license they had a home-
- built station ready to go in which they knew every component.

- You're right. Anyone who has not built a good portion of their
- station from scratch should be ashamed of himself.
-
- I guess I am a REAL HAM since *all* my transmitters are built from
- scratch (they're all CW, of course).
